2018 Kangaroo Coins Have Hopped to Provident!

Australia’s Perth Mint is known for producing annually released series of silver and gold coins based on the continent’s indigenous wildlife. Perhaps the most beloved series to come from the Perth mint is the Kangaroo series. But it took a bit for the current series to take shape.

In 1986, the Perth Mint introduced the Gold Nugget series of gold coins to symbolize the metal found within Australian soil. The gold nugget design was replaced in 1989 when a proof edition was released with a kangaroo design. Since this well-recognized marsupial has come to represent Australia, the mint ran with the notion of producing a coin featuring the kangaroo. Beginning in 1990, the Australian Gold Kangaroo was born. The featured kangaroo design on the reverse was changed annually to enhance the series’ collectability.

The Gold Kangaroo became internationally popular among investors and collectors, so the mint decided to expand the Kangaroo line of products. In 2016, the first Australian Silver Kangaroo was released in .9999 fine silver to meet demand. With this coin also came the introduction of the Perth Mint’s high-tech security and authentication features. These include fine radial lines in the field and a micro-engraved letter “A” within the first A of “Australian” that is only visible under magnification.

With the continuing popularity of the Kangaroo series, the Perth Mint took the opportunity to grow the family once more. The brand new 2018 Platinum Kangaroo, the first platinum coin in the series, is now available for pre-order at Provident. Along with this new edition, you can also pre-order the 2018 Gold Kangaroo and the 2018 Silver Kangaroo to add to your bullion collection.
