A Celtic Legend Comes to Life in the Medieval Legends Series

The latest issue of the Medieval Legends Series at Provident Metals brings a decidedly different tale to the collection than the first four issues. To date, the series has featured kind-hearted bandits, early embodiments of feminine power and independence, and rebels pushing back against authoritarians. In the Tristan and Isolde release, we see magic’s power to bring two people together in an undeniably powerful, yet forbidden, love.

The Tristan and Isolde Obverse

On the obverse side of the 1 oz Copper and 1 oz Silver Medieval Legends Tristan and Isolde Rounds, you will find a depiction of Tristan and Isolde coming together for an embrace. At the center of this legend, and love story is a bottle of magical potion that ensnares Tristan and Isolde in an unstoppable love, despite the fact that she is betrothed to another man. Tristan is shown here as he kneels down to embrace his beloved Isolde with the empty bottle of love potion still in his right hand.

Common Relics Reverse

The reverse side of both the copper and silver Medieval Legends Tristan and Isolde Rounds comes with the common design element for the series. Since its beginning, the Medieval Legends Series rounds have featured this design of a table setting from within the room of a Medieval stone castle. Each relic on the table represents a different tale in this collection, with the empty potion bottle shown in this design reflecting Tristan and Isolde.

Medieval Legends Options

Within the Medieval Legends Series releases, you will find both silver and copper rounds available for purchase. In both metals, the rounds offer .999 fineness and come with packaging options that include individual flips, acrylic tubes of 20, or boxes of 500 rounds. The designs in the Medieval Legends Series are available only for a limited time, with production capped once a new design is ready for production.

History of Tristan and Isolde

The story of Tristan and Isolde is the oldest to feature in the Medieval Legends Series, to date. This tale from Celtic folklore focuses on a knight named Tristan and a princess named Isolde. Some spellings of Isolde’s name in folklore use the spelling of Iseult. There are two primary narratives that have emerged over nearly 1,000 years for this tale, but in both, Tristan is a knight dispatched to Ireland by his uncle, King Mark of Cornwall. Tristan is to escort the Irish princess, Isolde, back to Cornwall to marry his uncle, the king. Along the way, the two come into possession of a love potion that they ingest, igniting a passion that burns so bright that the pair ignores the consequences of this forbidden love.

One of the main differences in the narratives of Tristan and Isolde is the longevity of the potion. One version says it lasts just days, while another suggests that its power is permanent.
