In the United States, Father’s Day has been formally celebrated for just over a century. It was in 1909 that Sonora Smart Dodd convinced her local church in Spokane, Washington, to honor dads everywhere with a Father’s Day observance. She had attended a Mother’s Day celebration at the church, but having been raised by her father alone, she felt Father’s Day would be an appropriate day to observe as well. In 1910, the first formal Father’s Day was celebrated on the third Sunday of June, a tradition still observed today.
