Produced by the Royal Canadian Mint, the 2018 Maple Leaf coins—in both gold and silver—are now available for pre-sale through select retailers like Provident. These coins are the flagship bullion product of the RCM, which now produces a wide variety of coinage and other bullion items. The Gold Maple Leaf was first minted in 1979, when the only other gold bullion coin was the South African Krugerrand. The Silver Maple Leaf was later introduced in 1988.
The Gold Maple Leaf contains one troy ounce of .9999 fine gold and carries a face value of 50 dollars (Canadian), while the Silver Maple Leaf contains one troy ounce of .9999 fine silver and carries a face value of 5 dollars. Both of these globally-renowned coins are released with the same design each year.
The obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The current portrait, designed by Jody Clark, is the fifth design based on Her Majesty for use on coinage in the UK and other countries around the world.
The reverse proudly displays Canada’s iconic maple leaf, which also acts as a national symbol. You’ll also find a small maple leaf-shaped privy mark that is laser engraved with “18” to denote the coin’s year of issue. The RCM added this privy mark in 2014 to help prevent counterfeiting.
The Royal Canadian Mint is known for their proprietary bullion DNA technology, which enhances the security of each coin produced there. Micro-inscribed radial lines in the field create a unique light diffracting pattern when held to the light, which makes the coins hard to replicate. This makes true Maple Leaf coins more secure for collectors and investors.
The new 2018 Maple Leaf coins are available now for pre-sale, and we expect them to begin shipping on December 20, 2017.
