After seven years of research and development, the US Mint is adding to its beloved American Eagle line of products with the Palladium American Eagle. This will mark the first official US palladium coin. Whispers of a Palladium Eagle coin have been circling among coin enthusiasts for some time now, and it will finally become a reality by the end of this year.
The mint has released proposed designs for the 2017 Palladium American Eagle, which are based on previous designs that have been favored in the past. The obverse closely resembles Adolph A Weinman’s Winged Liberty dime design (also known as the Mercury dime) that was struck between 1916 and 1945. It features Lady Liberty’s profile with her hair done up into a winged Phrygian cap. Inscriptions include “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “2017.” The matte mock up makes the small details pop, such as the folds in the cap’s fabric.
The reverse is a recreation of the American Institute of Architects’ gold medal that was first released in 1907. On it, an eagle stands on a rock and uses its beak and talons to pull a laurel branch from the rock. One of the key differences in this version of the design is the raised rim and the added inscriptions of “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ Pd .9995 FINE,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” The denomination of $25 can also be seen near the branch.
Numismatists and investors like yourself have been waiting for this debut, and the wait is nearly over. In the meantime, you might enjoy the US Mint’s last new American Eagle product, the 2017 Platinum American Eagle.
