Believe it or not, you might be ruining your coins while you read this. Many coin collectors and investors know the value of keeping gold, silver, and historic coins; however, many may be unaware of how to properly store precious metal coins.
Below is a list of ways coin owners may be damaging their investments:
- Too Much Touching – It is not unusual for someone to want to show off their collection, but doing so can lead to unwanted scratches or discoloration. This is because your fingertips may have oils or micro-particles that can collect on the surface of coins and cause damage. When handling coins, be sure to wash your hands and only touch the edges of the coins.
- Cleaning Your Coins – Coin owners may be tempted to clean or polish their coins in an attempt to keep them ‘shiny’, but the process of cleaning coins can actually strip coins of their toning. If this occurs the luster of your coins will fade, along with their value.
- Poor Storage – Examples of poor storage would be to keep coins in paper envelopes, cardboard boxes, or cheap plastic containers. Over time these storage options will break down and when they do chemical byproducts will be released and potentially tarnish or damage your coins. Be sure to store coins in acid-free paper/cardboard, or choose quality plastic containers.
- Exposure to the Elements – Make sure to not leave your coins in locations that may have fluctuating temperatures or moisture. Basements, attics, and garages are areas that experience drastic changes throughout the year – whether it’s summer heat, winter cold, or humidity. Leaving your coins in these areas will expose them to the elements and increase your coins’ chances of oxidation.
There are plenty of quick fixes to ensure the safety of your coins, but here’s the bottom line: Keeping coins in their mint-issued holders is the best way to keep them safe. Resist the temptation to break the seal on mint-issued holders and keep your coins clean, flawless, and valuable!
