Introducing Provident’s New Silver Buffalo Round

The Indian Head Nickel, or Buffalo Nickel, was designed by James Earl Fraser and produced by the US Mint from 1913 to 1938. It was made of 75 percent copper and 25 percent nickel. The coin was widely popular, until it was eventually replaced by the Jefferson Nickel, which is still produced today.

The Buffalo Nickel remains a favorite among coin collectors and numismatists. To commemorate this treasured coin, Provident Metals has designed a new Silver Buffalo Round based on the original design. We’ve partnered with classically trained sculptors with US coinage experience to modernize the overall look, while staying true to the original design.

Our Silver Buffalo Round, minted by the Golden State Mint, will consist of one troy ounce of .999 fine silver. Its value lies in the investment-grade bullion; this round carries no legal tender value. Many techniques went into designing and creating this silver round, including bas-relief techniques that were used centuries ago for sculpting Egyptian hieroglyphs and high-tech modern techniques within the bullion industry. Combining these techniques in a proprietary process results in the high-quality bullion rounds that have given Provident the reputation of being among the top bullion producers and sellers in the industry.

The obverse of this round features a reproduction of Fraser’s Indian Head design. He was commissioned by the US Mint to sculpt a design that captured the beauty of the American West. The portrait of an adult male Native American was inspired by three well-known chiefs: Big Tree of the Kiowa, Two Moons of the Cheyenne, and Iron Tall of the Lakota Sioux. Our round will have the word “LIBERTY” inscribed on this side, along with the year in which it was minted.

Fraser designed the reverse by sculpting Black Diamond, a 1550 pound bison that lived in the Central Park Zoo. Our reproduction will include inscriptions of “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “NOT LEGAL TENDER,” and “1 OZ .999 FINE SILVER.” In place of the denomination on the original coin, our silver round will have the Provident Compass as a mint mark.

The beautiful new Silver Buffalo Round allows you to add to your investment portfolio, while drawing on the widespread appeal of historical coinage. Do you collect historical coins? Which coin is your most treasured piece?
