Following the recent referendum in which 90 percent of voters selected independence for Catalonia, economists and business professionals agree that Catalonia splitting from Spain—and in turn, the European Union—would be disastrous for the region. If the split were to occur, Catalonia would lose access to free trade with Spain and other EU nations. As it stands, Catalonia is the most economically productive area of Spain, producing 25 percent of the country’s exports. The region also hosts over 7,000 foreign companies, some of which are preemptively moving their legal headquarters into other parts of Spain.
