Happy Friday the 13th, folks.
Today is one of two Friday the 13ths we will see in 2017. I’m sure you aware of its designation as spooooky, but do you know where the superstition regarding today originated? Are you one of the estimated 17 million people in the US afflicted by Friggatriskaidekaphobia- the fear of Friday the 13th?
Most historians trace this fear to Biblical times. At the Last Supper before the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, 13 men were present: Jesus and His 12 disciples. Allegedly, Judas (the betrayer of Christ) was the 13th guest to arrive at the dinner. Additionally, the crucifixion was believed to have taken place on a Friday, as well as Noah’s great flood and Adam and Eve’s eating of the forbidden fruit.
The ominous day also has significant Norse mythology ties. The term Friggatriskaidekaphobia is derived from the Norse goddess, Frigg, after whom “Friday” was named. According to Norse legend, a banquet took place at Valhalla, the hall of the gods. 12 gods and goddesses were invited, but, due to his mischievous nature, Loki was not among those on the guest list. This did not deter the trouble maker from making an appearance, however. The 13th guest arrived, and, through a series of events, he caused the death of the beloved god, Balder- again creating a fear of feasting in a room of 13.
For many who fear the day, the superstition has become a self-fulfilling prophecy. A study conducted in 2004 shows an increase in ailments from those suffering from Friggatriskaidekaphobia on Friday the 13th. The study surmises the distress is purely psychological and cannot be attributed to any supernatural force creating bad luck.
The study also reports that $800-$900 million dollars in business is lost on Friday the 13th due to superstitions of bad luck. Many are hesitant to start a new venture, invest, or even travel. If you’re looking to get hitched, this could be a great day to get a discount, as many see it as an unlucky way to start a union.
Personally, I do not believe in the bad luck of Friday the 13th. I enjoy the day for its creepy factor, but I won’t plan my day around superstition (unless it’s Aggie football related).
What are your thoughts? Are you a tad more nervous today? Does Friggatriskaidekaphobia affect you in any way? Do you believe in any of the common superstitions- breaking mirrors, walking under a ladder, coming across a black cat, opening an umbrella indoors, etc? I think I’m plagued by a fear of opening an umbrella indoors, but I don’t really know why!

Hummmm opening an umbrella INSIDE is a smart move. Umbrellas are simply mocked as portable lightning rods, and shouldn’t be made out of any metal what so ever. Opening the umbrellas outside is a chance of Fate. If she doesn’t care for someone, what a way to send a message across. Its a high probability that a person could have an instant funeral with a free cremation added at no “charge” (pun intended).
I think provident metals should offer a 13% discount on any creepy silver coins they have in stock on a Friday the 13th. Simply limit the discount to one coin – or thirteen. It will be a good purchase price and help excite some purchasing on an other wise gloomy day.

I’ll pass that suggestion along for October’s Friday the 13th! I love the idea.
I read the reason it’s bad luck to open an umbrella inside is because they used to be much more clunky and ran a risk for an awkward open. A large vicinity was needed to safely open them, so it was recommended that be done outside. The legend lives on!
