On July 4th, 1776, two hundred and forty years ago, a group of patriots gathered in a Philadelphia room to sign one of the most significant documents in history. In the midst of bullets and bayonets, the Revolutionaries put to paper their burning desire of freedom from British tyranny.
An increasingly oppressive King George III created a restless and dissatisfied people seeking independence and autonomy. The Proclamation of 1763 prohibited colonists from expanding territory west of the Appalachians, limiting the exploration of the vast wilderness the settlers greatly desired to conquer. The spark that began by the usurping of freedoms the colonists felt entitled to would lead to a conflagration unlike any the monarch could have foreseen.
After settlement regulations were imposed, Parliament fueled the fire of animosity by enacting a series of taxes and duties on the colonists. This prompted acts of rebellion under the tagline- “No taxation without representation.” Perhaps the most prolific protest during this time was the Boston Tea Party, where protesters donning the dress of Mohawk Indians destroyed over £9,000 of British tea.
The colonists quickly moved from dumping tea overboard British ships to violence. The “shot heard ‘round the world” began the Revolutionary War and the true fight for religious freedom, unjust taxing, and oppressive limits on exploration. Seeking sovereignty and independence took priority from 1763-1783.
A meeting of the foremost leaders in the fight was held to draft the document listing the ideals colonists believed to be non-negotiable rights for every man. These patriots shared a vision of freedom worth risking everything to attain.
