Life is full of unexpected and unwelcomed surprises. Sometimes these curveballs are from nature, while other times human error is to blame, but the only question that matters is: are you prepared?
Whatever the dangerous scenario happens to be, there are some basic supplies that should be a part of every emergency preparedness kit.
These necessities include:
- Water – one gallon per person, per day (the Red Cross recommends up to two weeks’ worth)
- Non-perishable food (minimum of three days worth)
- Flashlight
- Battery-powered or hand-crank radio
- Extra batteries
- First aid kit
- Multi-purpose tool
- Personal hygiene and sanitation items (toothbrush/paste, soap, hand sanitizer, etc.)
- Copies of personal documents (medication list and other important medical information, proof of address, deed/lease to home, passports, birth certificates, insurance policies, etc.)
- Spare keys (house, car, etc.)
- Cell phone (with charger)
- Emergency contact info
- Extra cash
- Blanket
- Backpack to carry supplies
Beyond the basics, there are several things you may need to think about packing that are specific to your family’s needs. For instance, if you have a young child, baby supplies and small games are important additions to your survival kit.
