After a strong response to the release of the centennial Morgan Dollar and Peace Dollar Silver Coins in 2021, the United States Mint had hoped to carry that momentum over into 2022 with the release of proof versions of the modern Morgan and Peace Dollar. Unfortunately, the US Mint recently announced that the 2022 Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars would be suspended. Citing the ongoing supply chain issues and a shortage of silver blanks, the US Mint has been forced to press pause on these modern numismatic releases.
Supply Chain Issues and Strong Demand
In announcing the suspension of the modern Morgan and Peace Dollars in 2022, the US Mint cited a shortage of silver blanks for use in production. However, the suspension of the program has as much to do with the strong demand for silver bullion as it does the shortage of silver blanks. These two factors have combined to force the US Mint’s hand in this situation.
When the US Mint announced pre-sales of the 2021 Morgan Dollars and 2021 Peace Dollar in August 2021, the overall mintage limit for the series was 1,075,000 coins. This broke down to 175,000 coins for each of the five 2021 Morgan Silver Dollars and 200,000 for the 2021 Peace Silver Dollar. Investors and collectors responded well to the release of these coins, with each of the six versions nearly reaching a full sell-out:
- 2021 Peace Dollar – 199,570
- 2021 Morgan Dollar CC Privy – 173,787
- 2021 Morgan Dollar O Privy – 173,640
- 2021 Morgan Dollar No Privy/No Mint Mark – 174,573
- 2021-S Morgan Dollar – 174,858
- 2021-D Morgan Dollar – 174,699
On top of this demand for the 2021 Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars, the US Mint has seen surging figures for the 2021 American Silver Eagle. The combined production of Type 1 and Type 2 coins in 2021 reached 28,275,000 coins in total. Add to that the strong start for sales of 2022 American Silver Eagles, with 5,001,000 coins sold during the first five weeks of 2022, and the US Mint’s supply of silver blanks is stretched.
No New Coins in 2022, but 2021s are Still Available
While the US Mint won’t be releasing 2022 versions of the Morgan and Peace Dollar, you’re still in luck if you’re hunting down the 2021 versions of the coins.
