A Star Rises in the Third Release of the British Music Legends Series
The British Music Legends Series debuted in 2020 with a depiction of the instruments used by the greatest stadium rock band in world history, Queen. A popular British group, Queen gained international stardom. As the series has moved on, other homegrown British artists who started small in the UK and eventually garnered international acclaim have featured in the collection. Those artists include Elton John as the second release and now David Bowie in the third release and the first design in the 2021 date mark. Now available as a new collection of British silver coins, the David Bowie design joins the British Music Legends Series.
The Starman on the Reverse
In the reverse design of the new coins in the 2021 British Music Legends David Bowie release, the Royal Mint features an image of Bowie based on his Aladdin Sane album release in 1973. The portrait of Bowie captures him in a leather jacket with his body facing front and his head turned looking to the right. There is a field of stars in the upper left and the trademark “Bowie” script in the lower right. There is a large lightning bolt behind his figure. The edge of the design field includes a repeating inscription of “2021 Fine Silver 999.” Each coin has its own weight marked in this repeating inscription. With the 1 oz proof silver coin in this release, the lightning bolt in the background depicts the same that is painted across the face of Bowie on the album color. With full colorization on this one coin in the release, you will notice a red lightning bolt with a stripe of a blue-and-black.
Queen Elizabeth II on the Obverse
For the obverse design element of 2021 British Music Legends David Bowie coins, the mint features the definitive fifth-generation effigy of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen is shown here in right-profile relief in a design from Jody Clark. Created in 2015 by Jody Clark, the image features the Queen at the age of 89 with the George IV State Diadem Crown on her head. The background field of the BU coins in this release have the Royal Mint’s guilloche design element, while the proof coins have a clear, mirrored finish. The inscriptions include “Elizabeth II,” “D.G. Reg. F.D.,” and the individual face values in Pound sterling for each coin.
