In addition to some of its BU releases on an annual basis, the East India Company and Issuing Authority of St. Helena produce gold and silver coins in collectible series as well. One of its newest is the Goddess Series. This collection launches its second design in 2023 and pairs the newest release with its debut image of King Charles III on the obverse of its coinage. Now is your chance to learn more about the Goddess Series release of St. Helena silver coins at Provident Metals.
The Eos Design
In the second design of the Goddess Series, the East India Company offers a depiction of Eos on the reverse of all 2023 Proof St. Helena Goddess Series Eos 1 oz Silver Coins. The image of Eos on the reverse captures her winged figure on the back of a radiant chariot as she raises her left hand toward the sky. The chariot is driven by three powerful steeds and the bottom rim of the field includes a beautiful sun just beginning to rise into the design field. Inscriptions on this side include EOS and the EIC mint mark.
Debut of King Charles III
On the obverse side of the 2023 Proof Goddess Series Eos Silver Coins, you will find the image of King Charles III. The newest English monarch makes his debut in this series with the 2023 release in a left-profile portrait that lacks a crown. The image is accompanied by inscriptions of CHARLES III, D.G. REX. F.D., ST. HELENA, 2023, and the individual face value of each weight available in this release.
Coins Available in the Eos Release
As with the debut release of the Hera coin in this series, the new Eos issue comes with three proof options. In addition to the 1 oz silver coin, the mint offers 5 oz silver and 10 oz silver options in the release, with all three coins featuring the same imagery. All three coins are proof specimens with frosted visuals and mirrored fields, and the coins are all individually packaged in presentation boxes with a Certificate of Authenticity included. The release has a limited mintage of 1,000 coins in the 1 oz weight, 500 coins in the 5 oz weight, and 250 coins in the 10 oz weight.
History of Eos
Eos is known for her role in bringing light to the world, driving away the darkness of the night, and announcing the arrival of her brother, the sun god Helios. She opens the gates of heaven each morning to allow the sun’s chariot to rise and travel across the sky. Her actions were seen as a renewing force, representing the cycle of birth, growth, and rebirth.
In Greek mythology, Eos is also associated with love and desire. She is often depicted as a passionate and romantic figure who is capable of intense infatuations. Eos had numerous lovers among both gods and mortals, resulting in various mythological stories. One of her most famous mortal lovers was Tithonus, whom she fell deeply in love with and asked Zeus to grant him immortality. However, she forgot to ask for eternal youth, and Tithonus ended up growing old and frail, becoming a cicada.
