The reverse of the 1 oz silver coin features a bald eagle perched above a banner with the words “Eternal Vigilance” along with the inscriptions of the coin’s weight, purity and “THE PRICE OF LIBERTY.” Former U.S. Mint sculptor/engraver Thomas D. Rogers designed the reverse exclusively for Provident Metals.
“Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty” is a quote attributed to Thomas Jefferson in the 1800s and is often used in different variations.
Honoring Benjamin Franklin, the obverse depicts a rattlesnake coiled in the grass ready to strike. “DON’T TREAD ON ME” and “ESTABLISHED IN 1754” surround the hissing snake. Franklin first produced the snake in a political cartoon with the words “Join, or Die,” urging colonies to join together during the French and Indian War.
