A lot of the attention of investors and collectors across North America is focused on the American Eagle or Canadian Maple Leaf Series. Given the prominence and history of the two collections, it is understandable. However, North America has another treasure in the form of the Mexican Mint’s Mexican Libertad bullion coin series. Issued for the first time in 1981 and 1982, respectively, the Mexican Libertad Gold and Mexican Libertad Silver Coins are now available in the 2022 date range. From Brilliant Uncirculated specimens to Proof and Reverse Proof coins, there’s a range of options available while supplies last at Provident Metals.
Shared Designs
Whether you purchase the 2022 Mexican Libertad 1 oz Gold Coin or the 2022 Mexican Libertad 1/20 oz Silver Coin, you will find the same main design components on the obverse and reverse of the coins. In the obverse design of all coins in this series, you will find the image of the current coat of arms of Mexico. This design focuses on a golden eagle in left-profile relief as it sits perched on a prickly pear cactus. The eagle is shown using its talons and beak to battle a serpent. Beneath this image, you will notice a wreath of oak and laurel, while above it, you will find the inscription of ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS.
Within the series, there is some variation in the obverse design. This variation is more of an addition, with the 1 oz, 2 oz, 5 oz, and 1 Kilo silver coins, as well as the 1 oz gold, all featuring a ring along the boundary of the obverse. This ring shows 10 historic versions of the national coat of arms. This is not present on any of the fractional-ounce coins.
As for the reverse, 2022 Mexican Libertad Coins all show the statue of Winged Victory. This statue is the same as the one found at the top of the Mexican Independence Victory Column in Mexico City. The design captures Victory in a three-quarter-left-profile relief with her right hand extended as it holds a laurel wreath crown, while her left hand is at her side with broken chains. In the distance, you’ll see the mountain peaks of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl. Inscriptions on this side will include the weight of the individual coin in ONZA, as well as either PLATA PURA or ORO PURO, 2022 LEY .999, and the mint mark of the Mexican Mint.
Mexican Libertad Gold Options
In the Mexican Libertad Gold Series, you will find 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz options. These are available in both the Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof versions of the coin, with the proof coins offering individual capsules, frosted design elements, and mirrored background fields. Libertad Gold Coins are also available in a Reverse Proof version in 1/2 oz and 1 oz weights, with capsules, mirrored designs, and frosted fields.
Mexican Libertad Silver Options
For the Mexican Libertad Silver Series, the Mexican Mint offers eight weights in total that range from 1/20 oz silver to 2 oz, 5 oz, and 1 Kilo silver. The BU series stops at the 5 oz silver weight, while the Proof range goes up to 1 Kilo. Once again, the Proof Mexican Libertad Silver Coins are, like the gold coins, available individually in capsules.
