History of Sweethearts
The development of cut lozenges came from Oliver R. Chase in 1847 when he developed a machine that could cut shapes from wafer candies. The original shapes were simple lozenges. The first candies with printed sayings came from Oliver’s brother, Daniel Chase, in 1866. He developed a separate machine that could stamp a message on these candies. Heart-shaped candies arose in 1901. From there, the rest is history, as they say. Roughly 8 billion heart-shaped Sweethearts candies are sold each year.
