With the New Year upon us, you may be pledging to get in shape, save money, or learn a new hobby. But have you made any stacking resolutions?
As we enter 2019, we find that spot prices are still hovering near historic lows while fundamentals in the precious metals markets are strengthening. So there’s no better time than now to evaluate your bullion collection and make some clear goals for how to capitalize on what could be some shining years ahead for metals. In that spirit, here are a few ways you can brighten your bullion collection in 2019.
Accumulate or complete a series
Maybe you’re looking for that final piece in the Queen’s Beast series to top off your collection. Or you’re excited to start something new, like our World of Dragons series. Or maybe you’ve accumulated every year of the Gold Lunar series, but never got around to picking up the 2019 release a couple of months ago. Or, like many disheartened gold and silver bugs in recent years, maybe you haven’t added to your stack at all lately because you’re waiting for a sign that precious metals markets are on the move up.
Whatever the case, now is the time to capitalize on low (but rising!) spot prices and attractive premiums to fill in any gaps in your collection!
Balance your bullion
Amassing bullion can be so fun that it’s easy to suddenly find yourself with too much of one type. But a mix of metals in a precious metals portfolio is the best way to take advantage of the unique supply and demand drivers behind each one of them.
So take advantage of the New Year’s fresh start to find ways to balance your bullion portfolio. Is your stack too silver-heavy? Then you’ll want to make a mental note to watch for specials on gold throughout the year. Have you always wanted to get in on platinum but were scared away by the price? At record low values, now is a perfect time to be on the lookout for great platinum deals.
Or maybe you find yourself with too much of one form. When you take a look at your collection, do you just see a stack of 1 oz coins? Then you might want to pick up some silver or gold bars in different weights to make your bullion portfolio more flexible and tradeable in the future.
And don’t forget: when it comes to different forms, you aren’t just limited to physical bullion that you hold in your hand. With spot prices on the move in 2019, you’ll want to earmark a portion of your precious metals portfolio to DGGold so that you can buy and sell quickly when the time is right.
Organize and store your bullion
Your responsibilities as a bullion investor aren’t over when the metals arrive at your door. Protecting your pieces from damage and the environment is just as important as ensuring you have a well-diversified portfolio. But it’s easy to fall behind on ensuring that your precious metals stay in top condition for generations to come.
Pure gold and silver are soft and easily scratched, dented, or nicked. So take time to make sure that each of your individual coins, bars, or rounds are kept in their original plastic flip. Or better yet, consider purchasing a PVS-free, Air-Tite capsule for every individual coin or bar you purchase this year.
Check to see if you’ve purchased enough individual coins or bars to start stacking them in protective tubes. And if you’re a serious collector, you can store several tubes at a time in secure monster boxes. Don’t forget to throw in a couple packets of silica gel to keep humidity levels low, and always handle your metals with soft gloves to prevent damage from your skin oils.
Sell what you don’t need
With a fresh year upon us, now is the perfect time to take a look at your collection with an unbiased eye to make room for what you really need. No matter how much you may be attached a piece, if it’s not contributing to the value of your stack, then maybe it’s time to let it go.
Consider selling back some of your bullion so that you can free up funds (and space) to potentially complete a collection or accumulate pieces that will not only bring you joy, but boost your bottom line, too.
