Each month, we here at Provident Metals love presenting our favorite coins to collectors. With so many coins entering the market, it can be difficult, as a collector, to discern which ones are of particular interest—which coins will make for the best addition alongside the rest of your collections. While the exact coin you’re looking for will depend on the collections you are hoping to amass, there are some coins that go well with almost any set. This month, we feel it necessary to shine a light on Canadian gold coins, particularly the 2019 Canadian Gold Incuse Maple Leaf.
Produced and minted by the Royal Canadian Mint, the Gold Incuse Maple Leaf coin is a staple among Canadian coin collectors, but it is one that should be widely renowned for its beauty and design. This 1-troy-ounce coin, made of very fine .9999 gold, is a coin that carries a $50 denomination mark. Since 1908, the Royal Canadian Mint has produced a consistent batch of amazing gold coins. In 1979, the mint struck its first Gold Maple Leaf coin, and the coins have only gotten better and more technically produced over time.
The technical advancements made with these coins have been stunning, applying incredible anti-counterfeiting protection methods, including precision radial lines, advanced engraving, and the RCM’s patented BULLION DNA technology. 40 years out from its inception, this Canadian gold coins series has been revamped, featuring a double-incuse version of the historical Gold Maple. Let’s take a closer look at the coin to see just how special it is!
The Obverse
The obverse of this coin is similar to the past Gold Incuse Maple Leaf coins, with all of the beautiful updates. Susanna Blunt’s portrait rendering of Queen Elizabeth II is the primary feature on this coin’s obverse. This 2019 update features the unique incuse design across her Majesty’s portrait. Alongside her portrait there are various inscriptions, including “ELIZABETH II,” “50 DOLLARS,” and “2019.” And don’t forget that this coin is worth more than $50! This coin will be valued even higher in time, whether for its metallic content or for its rich place in history.
The Reverse
Canadian gold coins, especially the Maple Leaf series, are instantly recognizable for their … well … maple leaf—the traditional symbol of Canadian heritage and pride. This 40th-anniversary edition of the Canadian Gold Incuse Maple Leaf coin features a tiny textured maple leaf, which is featured as a security measure by the RCM, just barely visible beneath the larger one. With magnification, a small “2019” is visible within the small maple leaf, heightening the security measures to ensure that this coin is verifiably produced by the RCM, allowing for its grading and inherent worth. Other engravings on the coin highlight the metallic value within the coin, particularly the .9999 fine gold, weighing in at one troy ounce.
For collectors interested in this coin, it should be said that it is one that is IRA-eligible. People looking to add this coin to their coin collection, whether alongside other Canadian gold coins or for those interested in diversifying their portfolio, will have stumbled upon a unique, noteworthy coin. The value of this coin will be influenced by the spot price of gold, a commodity that is highly valuable and which can be utilized as a hedge against inflation of the USD and other global trading trends.
Furthermore, if you’re looking for a gift for a coin-collecting friend or a Canadian relative who is prideful of their heritage, you should look no further than this option! The sheer beauty of this coin makes it an item to be revered both far and wide. Whether to be put on display within their home or stored away as a precious heirloom to be passed on to further generations, this coin is one to get the attention of anyone who sees it.
