Some of the most famous characters from the mythology of Germanic and Norse culture are the Valkyrie. The warrior maidens were virgin daughters of Odin, the Father God of Norse mythology, and responsible for escorting the bravely departed from human battles to Valhalla. The Germania Mint has launched a new series of silver rounds honoring these warriors and the first release is Hildegard. A Warrior Maiden
In the obverse design of the 1 oz Silver 2022 Valkyries Hildegard Round, the Germania Mint offers a depiction of a new figure. The front-facing relief of Hildegard captures the image of a bold and powerful female warrior. This maiden from Odin’s crew of Valkyrie stands at the ready with her wooden shield in one hand and a spear in the other. By her side, Fafnir the wolf stalks along with Hildegard. There is a wooden palisade in the forest in the background and the moon is rising into the night sky in the distance. Inscriptions on this side of the round include only HILDEGARD.
A New Reverse Design
For the reverse side of the Silver 2022 Valkyries Hildegard Round, there is a new design available from the Germania Mint. The entirety of the design field includes a depiction of a wooden shield. To the left side of the design element, you will find the image of a howling wolf. On the right side of the design field, you will find the double-headed eagle, the seal of the Germania Mint. Inscriptions on this side read GERMANIA, 2022, 1 OZ AG 999.9, and 5 MARK.
Details from the Hildegard Release
As the first release of the new Valkyries Series, the Hildegard design marks the start of a new adventure. These rounds are presented with individual capsules and come with a Certificate of Authenticity from the mint. Each round has 1 Troy oz of .9999 pure silver and the series offers a mintage of 25,000 rounds in total.
About the Valkyrie
In Norse mythology, the Valkyrie were virgin, warrior maidens who were said to be the daughters of Odin. It was the responsibility of the Valkryie to fly in the skies on winged horses overseeing the battles between men. In particular, it was the Valkyrie who would determine which of those killed died an honorable death and were worthy of a spot in Valhalla alongside Odin.
