Australia’s Perth Mint is one of the global leaders in the production of bullion gold, silver, and platinum coins. For those who have invested in gold and silver for years, coins from the Perth Mint are a familiar sight and coveted for the ever-changing reverse design elements that feature native species from the Australian continent. Anchored by the 1990 release of the Australian Kookaburra silver coins and the Australian Kangaroo gold coins, Perth Mint first expanded these offerings in 2007 with the debut of Perth Mint Australian Koala Silver Coins. Now, Provident Metals has the most recent design in stock for investors in 2022.
A New 2022 Koala Reverse
In the reverse design of 2022 Australian Koala 1 oz Silver Coins, Perth Mint offers the image of a koala taking on a nap in the canopy of a gum tree. Koalas are members of the marsupial family and are often incorrectly referred to as koala bears, despite the fact they are not bears. Koalas live on eucalyptus leaves as a dietary staple and are said to sleep for as many as 20 hours a day. In this design from Ing Ing Jong, the koala is lounging on a branch with its right front and rear paws dangling down the branch as it holds onto the branch, primarily, with its rear-left paw, and rests its head on its front-left paw. The field includes inscriptions of 2022 1 OZ 9999 SILVER, KOALA, and the P mintmark of Perth Mint.
Latest Monarch Obverse
For the obverse design of 2022 Australian Koala Silver Coins, Perth Mint currently features the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This design was created in July 2015 by Jody Clark for the Royal Mint of England. It debuted on British coins in 2016 and did not appear on Australian coins until 2018. As of 2020, it is now found on all Australian coins. The design shows the Queen in right-profile relief with the George IV State Diadem Crown. In this portrait, she is aged 89 years. Inscriptions on this face of the coin read ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, and 1 DOLLAR.
Details of the 2022 Koala
The 2022 Australian Koala 1 oz Silver Coin comes with individual protective capsules. When buying multiples, the coins come in sealed rolls of 20 coins or boxes of 100 silver coins. The box comes with a total of five rolls of 20 coins each. For the seventh year in a row, Perth Mint has capped the mintage of 1 oz Koalas at 300,000 in total. Only the 2016 coin has sold out its entire mintage at the mint.
Background on the Australian Koala Series
In 2007, the Australian Koala Silver Series was introduced as the second major silver bullion series from the mint. The Australian Koala was built on the success of the Australian Kookaburra, introduced in 1990, and was the second Koala-themed bullion coin from Perth. The first Koala bullion coin was a platinum series issued from 1988 to 2000. The 2007 debut featured only these 1 oz silver coins. In 2008, 1 Kilogram, 10 oz, and 1/2 oz silver coins were added to the series. In 2016, Perth Mint halted the 1/2 oz and 10 oz silver coins, leaving only these 1 oz silver coins and 1 Kilogram silver coins.
